Frequently Asked Questions :

1) Is sign language international?

No. Every country use different sign language to communicate.
For instance, British Sign Language and Australian Sign Language are different from American Sign Language.

2) Is American Sign Language (ASL) is the same as Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia (BIM)?

No. They are both different. However, BIM is derived from ASL. Hence, there are a few signs that are quite similar. You can read the history here & here.

3) Can I learn ASL first before BIM?

Yes. You can learn ASL first then learn BIM.
Once you know the signs, you can easily differentiate between ASL and BIM.

4) What are the differences between American Sign Language (ASL), Pidgin Signed English (PSE) , Signed Exact English (SEE)?

Watch this video.

5) What are the differences between Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia (BIM) and Kod Tangan Bahasa Melayu (KTBM)?

Read here & here.

6) What signs do you use for your sign language videos?

I learned ASL through Youtube videos (thedailysign, ASL Anissa, Bill Vicars, ASL Stew),
lifeprint.com , handspeak.com , & spreadthesign.com for about a year.
Then I went to a BIM class by Persekutuan Orang Pekak Malaysia.

So basically, I learned ASL first before BIM.
I use BIM when I am talking to a deaf person in Malaysia.
However, when I sign songs for my sign language videos on Instagram, I will use PSE.
Because I am a beginner and I find that signing in PSE is easier rather than in ASL or BIM.

7) Why do you want to learn sign language?

I already answered that on my Instagram.
So, do visit my Instagram with hashtag : #illiyasigns . :)
